Why it inspires you: This piece inspires me because you can capture the violence and passion of the artist from the brush strokes and colours chosen in the piece. The abstract piece shows hidden identity through nudity as its contorted structure makes the art be different within the eyes of the beholder. You cannot tell the emotion behind the woman but only the admiration of her features through the male artist.
Potential ideas for theatrical work: A piece where male actors drag around a female actor and just play with her body and experiment with it. Firstly, this came to my mind as it relates to the artist but is demonstrated in a theatrical light. The female actor shouldn't show any emotion and just accept her role as the audience will be able to infer whether she is happy or not.
Title of art piece: Pieta or Revolution of the Night
Artist: Max Ernst 1891-1976
Artist rationale: The traditional Pieta is an image of the Virgin Mary holding the dead body of Jesus Christ Ernst subverts this religious motif by showing himself carried by a staunch Catholic who denounced his sons work, and the painting can be seen as arising out of their troubled relationship.

Themes of the piece: Religion, Love, Secret, Communication, Dream, Pain and Family.
Why it inspires you: This inspired me because of its relation to religion and the juxtaposition of what religious imagery came to mind when I saw this (Mary holding Jesus). How intimate the artist brought his own life to his work to show that not even his father was supportive. Also, I found the art piece carried potential for a story within both characters within the piece and how only one is in colour - Was anyone ever there for him or was it just a fantasy.
Potential ideas for theatrical work: I believe, actors could show the stress and strain within a parent and child relationship through physical movement. The silent movement would help emphasise the miss communication and responsibility between the two therefore, showing the audience the dominant message of the affect of communication.
Title of art piece: The Three Dancers
Artist: Pablo Picasso 1881-1973
Artist rationale: The jagged forms of the Three Dancers convey an explosion of energy. The image reflects Picasso's personal recollections of a triangular affair, whic resulted in the heart-ache suicide of his friend Carlos Casagemas. The left hand dancer seems possessed by uncontrolled, Dionsyian frenzy.Her face relates to a mask from Torres strait, New Guinea, owned by artist which points to picasso's association of tribal art and sexuality.
Dionsysus - is the god of the grape harvest, wine-making and wine, of ritual madness, fertility, theatre and religious ecstasy in Greek mythology.

Themes of the piece: Sex, Affair, Death, Madness, Chaos, Explosion, Corrupt, Disaster and Lost
Why it inspires you: The art piece reflected the intimacy of dance in a different light and showed how affairs and adultery can be viewed as a triangular dance. How abstract the bodies are presented make me think the characters are lost within the mayhem of the relationship and therefore, lose themselves in the process. How one is more hurt and crazy tells me they lost the most from this affair and no equilibrium was restored.
Potential ideas for theatrical work: A powerful movement piece between two/three actors in which they move to the heart-ache and disasters within the relationship. I think contact improvisation will reflect this art as effectively because the characters inside the painting do not let go of one another and their figures are overshadowed by one another's mistake.

Title of art piece: Pices
Artist: Man Ray 1890-1975
Artist rationale: Piseces was based on an image from Les Mains libres. The woman alongside a fish to create what the artist described as "a contrasting of similar and different forms at the same time". Man Ray strengthened the identification of a woman and fish by choosing Pices, the zodiac sign of paired fishes.

Themes of the piece: Relationship, Unity, Company, Similarity, Peace and Quality
Why it inspires you: From the comparison of a fish to a woman I noticed how the artist wanted to capture the intimate similarities between an animal and human. It reminds me how we was all made by one God and shouldn't feel superior to one another and connect to find our true meanings. How two species can lay together in peace is the hidden beauty in this piece.
Potential ideas for theatrical work: Two actors of different gender, race or sexuality could mimic each-others movement to highlight we are all the same person underneath. How the two differences can flow between one another and not over power the intimacy of the movement is what I would want to capture if this was theatrical work.

Title of art piece: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik ( A little night music)
Artist: Dorothea Tanning 1910-2012
Artist rationale: This scene is a dreamy hotel corridor appears haunted by unnatural forces. The oversized sunflower on the landing is strangely animated. A life-size doll leans in the doorway while the long hair of a girl stands on end, blown by the wind. These unexpected elements suggest childhood fantasises and nightmares, echo elements of the Gothic novels that tanning loved. The title "A Little Night Music" is borrowed from one of Mozart's most light-hearted chamber works.

Themes of the piece: Dream, Fantasy, Youth/Childhood, Adventure and Nightmares
Why it inspires you: The naturalism of the painting drew me in, then how its naturalistic tone is juxtaposed against the fantasy of the art piece. It makes the beholder infer what they will from adding such delicate, girly objects in a twisted nightmare. The deception of the nightmare cannot be seen through first glance but only from the composition and qualities of the objects.
Potential ideas for theatrical work: I think bringing an actors dream to physical life can accompany this piece as it can show the difference between a nightmare and dream. Soft, gentle movement can represent a dream and all its intimate qualities as the actors move between one another and carry the dreamer. Tough, aggressive movement can symbolise the manipulation of a nightmare and how the dreamer has no control over it - the movement becomes broken and painful.
